The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Charl Brown
Nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical, Motown: The Musical
"I am feeling fine on cloud nine! I’m just overjoyed. This is really a dream-come-true moment for me, I can’t even believe it’s happening. I was barely able to sleep last night, so I set my alarm and I got up and watched it, not really expecting myself to be nominated, but then when they got to my category and they called my name first, I just took off running and screaming around my tiny apartment. Once I settled down, I called my parents in San Diego and woke up them up and told them the news—they, of course, had no idea that the nominations were coming out today, nor that I was even a possibility for being nominated. I don’t think they’ve been back to bed since. And then I called Stark [Sands], my best friend, who was also nominated today, and we just couldn’t believe it. I don’t even know if we talked, we were both so speechless. It’s quite incredible because we happen to be on Broadway at the same time, for the first time, and now to be both nominated in the same season? It’s also cool that we’re in separate categories so we don’t have to worry about competing against each other! It was a little disheartening to find out that the show didn’t get the nomination that we feel we deserve, but we’re going to keep moving forward. We have a great show, so we know that we are going to do these songs for a long time! The world seems a little bit brighter, I have to say. Looking out the window, everything is in Technicolor today."
